낙엽성 교목으로, 높이는 16m까지 자란다. 줄기 수피는 평활하고, 짙은 회갈색이며, 피목이 수평으로 갈라진다. 어린 가지는 회갈색으로, 세로로 갈라지며, 잔털이 드물게 있다. 동아의 끝은 뾰족하고, 아린은 12∼16개이고, 홍갈색으로 윤기가 있으며, 양면에 부드러운 털이 있다. 화아는 긴 달걀형으로, 길이 5∼8mm이고, 엽아는 화아보다 가늘다. 엽흔은 반원형, 다소 융기하며, 유관속흔은 3개이다. 잎 호생하며, 단엽이다. 엽신은 타원상 난형 또는 도란형으로, 길이 7.3∼11.8cm, 폭 3.7∼6.3cm이고 주맥의 양편에 10∼12개의 측맥이 있다. 잎의 향축면은 녹색이고 털이 거의 없다. 잎의 배축면은 약간 백색을 띤 옅은 녹색으로 어린잎의 뒷면에는 부드러운 털이 밀생하다가 성숙하면 잎 뒷면의 맥 상에만 산생한다. 엽신의 선단부는 점첨두이고, 엽저는 원저, 엽연은 선상의 복거치가 발달하였으나 단거치도 섞여 있다. 탁엽은 조락성이고, 선형으로, 선상의 엽연을 가지고 있으며, 길이 7∼17mm, 털이 있다. 엽병의 크기는 11.7∼22.9 × 0.9∼1.4mm로, 녹색이며, 털이 있다. 한 쌍의 밀선은 엽신의 기부(또는 엽병 상부)에 크고 뚜렷한 형태로 붙어있다. 꽃 3월말∼4월에, 잎이 나오기 전에 피며, 양성화이다. 3∼5개의 꽃이 산형화서(또는 산방화서)를 이루며 전년도 가지의 엽액에 달리고, 총화경은 거의 없거나 짧다. 화서의 크기는 2.1∼4.2 × 2.5∼5.3cm이다. 소화경의 크기는 11.5∼27 × 0.7∼2.2mm이고, 부드러운 털이 있다. 화서 아래쪽에 달리는 포는 홍자색을 띠는 연두색이며, 선상의 가장자리는 결각이 지고, 양쪽 표면에 털이 있다. 화탁통은 원통형으로, 크기 3.8∼7.8 × 1.8∼3.5mm, 털이 있고, 홍색이다. 꽃받침은 5개, 악편은 피침형 또는 좁은 피침형으로 개화 시 곧게 선다. 악편의 가장자리에 잔거치가 발달하며, 크기는 2.5∼5× 1.4∼3.1mm이며, 홍자색 또는 홍자색을 띤 녹색으로, 양면에 털이 있다. 화판은 5장, 도란상의 타원형, 또는 넓은 타원형으로 선단 부분은 중앙 부분이 움푹 패어 들어간 모양이며, 크기는 5.8∼17.8 × 10∼15.6mm로, 연한 분홍색이다. 수술은 대략 35개로, 꽃잎보다 더 낮고, 약은 짙은 노란색이다. 수술대는 털이 없다. 암술은 1개이며, 암술머리는 연녹색이다. 암술대의 길이는 8.7∼15.6mm로서 밑부분에 털이 산생한다. 자방은 상위로, 좁은 난형이며, 크기는 2∼3.3 × 0.8∼2.4mm이다. 열매 핵과(drupe)이고, 5∼6월에 흑자색으로 익으며, 꽃받침은 탈락한다. 크기는 직경 5.2∼8.4mm이고, 구형으로, 표면은 매끈하다. 과경은 16.9∼31.3mm, 털이 있다. 중과피는 육질성이며, 떫다. 내과피는 구형에서 난형으로, 한쪽 가장자리에 얕은 주름이 있으며, 크기는 5.6∼7.6 × 4.1∼5.8mm이고, 표면은 연한 노란색으로, 익어도 열리지 않는다. 종자 구형에서 난형, 크기는 4.5∼5 × 3.3∼3.6mm, 연한 노란색으로 표면에는 세로로 줄무늬가 있다.
Description
Trees deciduous, to 16m tall. Stems barks smooth, dark grayish brown, lenticels horizontal; young branches grayish brown, with vertical cracks, sparsely pubescent; scaly winter buds cuspidate, bud scales 12∼16, reddish brown, lustrous, pubescent on both sides, flower buds long ovoid, 5∼8mm long, leaf buds lanceolate ovoid; leaf scar half round with 3 bundle scars, somewhat raised. Leaves alternate and simple, blade elliptic-ovate to obovate, 7.3∼11.8cm long, 3.7∼6.3cm wide, lateral veins 10∼12 on each side of midvein, adaxial surface green and glabrous, abaxial surface pale green tinged with white slightly, young leaves with dense and soft hairs abaxially, but sparse soft hairs persistent along the veins when mature, apex acuminate, base rounded, margin glandular doubly-serrate (sometimes mixed with single serrate); stipules early deciduous, linear with gland-tipped margin, 7∼17mm long, hairy; petiole 11.7∼22.9 × 0.9∼1.4mm, green and pubescent; a pair of leaf glands at the base of blade margin (or apical part of petiole), conspicuous and large. Flowers late Mar to Apr, precocious, bisexual. Inflorescences umbellate (no peduncle) or corymbose (with very short peduncle), 3∼5 flowered, axillary on previous year’s branches, 2.1∼4.2 × 2.5∼5.3cm; pedicels 11.5∼27 × 0.7∼2.2mm, pubescent with soft hairs; floral bracts purplish green, lobed and gland-tipped margin, pilose on both surfaces. Hypanthium cylindrical, 3.8∼7.8 × 1.8∼3.5mm, pubescent, reddish purple. Sepals 5, calyx lobes lanceolate or narrowly lanceolate, errect or spreading at flowering, margin minutely serrate, 2.5∼5× 1.4∼3.1mm, reddish purple or purplish green, pubescent. Petals 5, elliptical to obovate, apex emarginate, 5.8∼17.8 × 10∼15.6mm, pale pink. Stamens ca. 35, lower than petals; anthers dark yellow; filaments glabrous. Carpel 1 with bright green stigma, Style with hairs at the bottom, 8.7∼15.6mm. Ovary superior, narrowly ovoid, 2∼3.3 × 0.8∼2.4mm. Fruit drupe, May∼Jun, usually blackish red at maturity, calyx lobes caducous, globose, 5.2∼8.4mm, surface smooth, fruit stalk 16.9∼31.3mm long, with hairs. Mesocarp fleshy, bitter taste; endocarp globose to ovoid, with a shallow longitudinal groove on one side, 5.6∼7.6 × 4.1∼5.8mm, light yellow, indehiscent at maturity. Seeds globose to ovoid, 4.5∼5 × 3.3∼3.6mm, light yellow, surface striate.
