형태
낙엽활엽관목이고 직립하며 3 m까지 자란다. 줄기는 오래된 껍질은 짙은 회갈색이며, 길이방향으로 갈라진 굵은 주름이 있다. 2년지는 자주색이고, 매끄러우며, 때로는 껍질이 벗겨지는 경우도 있고, 도드라진 타원형의 피목이 있으며, 털이 남아있거나 없다. 1년생 가지는 2년지의 끝이나 엽액에서 나오며, 연두색 또는 자주색이 섞인 연두색이고, 마디사이에 아래쪽 마디로 이어지는 약간 위를 향한 두줄의 흰색 털이 있고 때로는 전체에 털이 있다. 잎은 대생하고, 엽병은 길이 1.5~4.1 mm이고, 줄기를 절반쯤 감싸며, 안쪽으로 마디까지 털이 밀생한다. 엽신은 타원형, 넓은타원형 또는 난형으로 길이 3.6~12.3 × 2.1~7.7 cm이다. 엽선은 예첨두 또는 첨두이고, 거치는 잔거치이며 엽저는 원저이다. 잎 표면은 털이 없고 하면은 도드라진 주맥과 측맥 위에 흰색의 면모가 잎 가운데를 중심으로 집중되어 있으나 성숙하면서 많이 탈락하고 조금 남는다. 상면은 녹색이고 하면은 백록색이며 상하면 모두 표면은 매끈하다. 꽃은 4~5월에 1년생 가지의 끝과 엽액에 1~2개 달리고 양성이며 개방화이고 충매화이다. 화병은 길이 2.9~10.3 mm이고, 화관은 깔때기모양으로 연한 황록색에서 적색으로 변화한다. 화통은 길이는 1.9~3.6 cm, 지름 6.9~14.1 mm로써 열편은 끝에서 5개로 얕게 갈라지고 원두로 뒤로 약간 젖혀지고 가장자리는 안쪽으로 약간 말린다. 화관 기부에는 짧은 흰색의 털이 드물게 산재하고 내면에는 황색의 유도선이 있다. 화사는 길이 17.7~27.3 mm, 직경 0.4~0.6 mm이고 화사의 절반은 화통 내면에 붙어있으며 약은 2실이고 정자착하며 길이 4.3~6.2 × 0.7~1.1 mm이고, 황색이다. 화주는 길이 24.5~34.5 mm, 직경 0.5~0.8 mm이고, 주두와 함께 연한 황색이며, 주두는 머리모양이고 얕게 갈라진다. 악은 5개로 심열하고, 녹색, 자색 또는 자색을 띤 녹색이며, 악편은 선형이고, 외면 전체에 털이 있다. 자방은 하위이고, 2실이며, 자루가 있고, 짧은 털이 있으며, 녹색이고, 광택이 없다. 자방의 기부에는 침형 소포가 달리고, 소포 외면에 털이 없다. 열매는 원기둥형의 삭과이고, 길이는 1.9~2.3 cm, 지름 1.4~2.5 mm이며, 과병은 거의 없고, 9~10월에 흑자색 또는 흑색으로 성숙한다. 완전히 성숙하면 중축을 기준으로 2개로 갈라지고, 위쪽으로 종자가 밖으로 흩어진 후 봄까지 열매 껍질이 탈락하지 않고 남아있다. 종자는 길이 0.8~1.2 mm, 폭 0.4~0.5 mm이고, 원통형 마름모꼴이며, 황갈색을 띄고, 종자의 표면은 작게 패인 흔적들로 치밀하게 채워져 있다.

비고
Nakai (1918)는 병꽃나무(W. subsessilis)를 애기병꽃나무속의 Diervilla subsessilis로 기재하였으나 Bailey (1929)는 Weigela subsessilis로 속을 변경하였으며 이후 Uyeki (1940)는 흰털병꽃나무(W. subsessilis var. mollis)를 기재하였다. Kim Y. D. and S. H. Kim (1999)은 핵의 rDNA ITS 시퀀스를 기반으로 한 계통분석을 통하여 병꽃나무가 Weigela속임을 밝혔고, Chang et al. (2014.)에서는 W. subsessilis var. mollis를 W. subsessilis의 이명으로 처리하였다.

번식방법
번식은 9월에 익은 열매를 채취하여 봄에 이끼 위에 파종하여 발아시켜야 한다. 또한 봄부터 여름 사이에 새로 자란 가지를 꺾꽂이하여 증식한다.

Description
Shrubs deciduous, erect, 3m tall. Stems old bark dark gray brown, thick wrinkles cracked in the longitudinal direction; biennial branches purple, smooth, sometimes peeled, ovalshaped lenticels, with or without hair; annual branches sprout from the end or leaf axils of the biennial branches, light green or light green with a purple color, two rows of curly white hairs slightly upward, leading from the spot where the leaves cover the stem to the lower node. Leaves opposite, elliptical, oval or ovate, 3.6~12.3 × 2.1~7.7 cm; margin serrulate, apex acuminate or acute, base round; scattered lying hairs on the whole leaf; upper surface white lying hairs on a slightly concave vein; on the lower surface, the white hairs on the central and side vein concentrated to the center of the leaf and become dense; upper surface green, lower surface white-green, and the upper and lower surfaces smooth; short petiole with a length of 1.5~4.1 mm or less encircles the stem halfway, and the hair densely inward to the node. Flowers Apr. to May, epigynous; 1~2 flowers sprout from the end or leaf axils of the annual branches; hermaphroditic, entomophilous flower; peduncle short, 2.9~10.3 mm long; corolla funnel-shaped, changes from light yellow-green to red; corolla 1.9~3.6 cm long, 6.9~14.1 mm dia., lobe shallowly divided into 5 pieces at the end; the edges slightly rounded inward, tilted slightly backward; short white hairs rarely scattered on the base of the corolla, yellow external secretion on the inside of the corolla; filament 1.8~2.7 cm long, 0.4~0.6 mm diam., longer than the sepals, half of the filament attached to the inside of the corolla; anther 2-room, yellow, 4.3~6.2 × 0.7~1.1 mm; style 24.5~34.5 mm long, 0.5~0.8 mm diam., light yellow with the stigma; stigma, head shape and divides shallowly; calyx deeply divided into five, linear, green, purple or purple green, hairs throughout the outer surface; ovary inferior, 2-room, a short receptacle, short trichome, green and no glossy; aciculate bracteole of sprout from the base of the ovary, no hairs scattered on the outside of bracteole. Fruits Sep. to Oct., cylindrical drupe, ripe black purple or black when mature, 1.9~2.3 cm long, 1.4~2.5 mm dia., little a fruitstalk; split into 2 pieces based on the central axis when completely mature, pericarp remains without falling until spring after the seeds scattered out to the top. Seeds cylindrical diamond shape, yellowish brown color, 0.4~0.5 mm width, 0.8~1.2 mm long; densely packed with traces of small depressions on the surface of the seed.
